Motion to Rejoin, Matador Records
This third record from the appropriately named duo of Naybob Shineywater and Rachael Hughes is perfect comedown music for your next after-hours party. Trodding over nine tracks with dirge-like abandon, BBML make the ethereal sounds of Mazzy Star seem like dancehall reggae. The churning synths and breathy vocals clear at times for a harmonic chorus and even horns (albeit at the tempo of a fine morphine drip) on tracks like “Oppressions Each.” Atmospheric elements are at the fore throughout this disc. If the KLF’s Chill Out was your cup of tea, this is more of the same, albeit without the borrowed material. Unsampled otherworldly pop has to account for something.
