A Hull Full Of Oil and Bone, Self-Released
This is the first review where I asked The Satellite to, “just send me something, anything.  I don’t want to review a punk band this time around.” Man I am eating my words. Listing Ship sounds like if the Brady Bunch kids grew up and changed their sound to “indie rock.” Read the rest of this entry »

Jay’s JumpstartBy J. Maggio, December 2008
2008 was a mixed bag musically, as well as in general. That being said, it is always fun to celebrate the holidays geek-style: by making pointless lists. Consequently, here is my pick for the best recordings of 2008. Read the rest of this entry »

Idle Hands

Whatever your political beliefs may be, it is clear to most everyone that we are in the midst of an economic downturn. I mean, we’ve all seen the stock market steadily dropping, the bank bailout, and of course, that Allstate commercial. You know, the spokesperson with the comforting voice standing in a grocery aisle talking about the recession and asking if we’re in good hands? Read the rest of this entry »

Independent, local artists are trying to do something different in Gainesville. Long known for its diverse music scene, Gainesville is quickly becoming a place for new and exciting artwork.  Not content with renderings of palm trees in oil paint or tranquil watercolor beach scenes, two artists are creating new perspectives on what galleries can display in Gainesville. As Dane Brevoort raises his sharpened knife and hacks it down from tip to heel in one continuous motion, a few tears fall from his eyes. It’s 10:40 a.m.
He blinks rapidly in an attempt to shake them, but he can’t. Once the first one’s out, there’s no stopping the rest.

The holidays don’t have to be the holly-daze. Even though plenty of folks are coming in and out of the house, sometimes unexpectedly, it doesn’t mean that it has to be stressful. These winter celebrations mean a busy time of year for so many people. It is a jam-packed month, filled with parties and events that bring the spirit of the season out in everyone, Bah Humbug! Well, if that’s your spirit too, then grab the Spirits! Having a few special libations will make any drop-by or planned get-together an event to remember, or forget. Read the rest of this entry »

Transition to Reality

By Hank Stram, December 2008
Just in case it’s not abundantly clear, I want to point out that in Right-wing world, nothing is ever Bush’s fault. Everything bad that happened up until a few months ago? Clinton’s fault. Everything bad that happened since a few months ago? That’s the market responding to the terrifying reality of the impending Obama presidency. Read the rest of this entry »

Christmas CoutdownBy Sassy Crafter, December 2008
This time of year, kids can hardly wait for the man in the red suit to bring toys to all good girls and boys. One way to help kids count the days is with an Advent calendar. But why settle for an old-fashioned paper one? Make a 3-D sculpture that can hold a small surprise for every day between now and Christmas Eve! Read the rest of this entry »
