Charles Ray & The Righteous Kind

Charles RayBy Sarah Wears-Garcia, September 2008

Some Are of Love, Self-Released

Warning: after initially dismissing this album as unmemorable, you may find a rather pleasant melody inexplicably lodged in your head and eventually realize it’s the catchy refrain from “All I Really Want,” the second track on this debut album.

And—herein lies its appeal—you’re perfectly happy for it to be there. Each song teeters on the brink of devolving into a parody of ‘60s-era rock until you realize that, well, it’s not: Charles Ray actually sings “Hey Daddy-O, let’s go, go, go!” (accompanied by lively 12-bar blues) apparently without irony. The slinky “Russian Women” is a standout, as is “Pink Cashmere,” thanks to Ray’s enthusiastic yodeling. The charm of this music is in the musicians, so catch them on Oct. 3 at The Backstage Lounge.
