Into Lake Griffy, Self-Released

Matt Tobey’s music is not for everyone.  His solo albums are an earnest Daniel Johnston homage, and his voice is best described as man- child.

His recent loud rock unit Good Luck however takes these critiques of Bloomington’s Peter Pan Syndrome and solos his way into an unabashed Ted Leo territory. Ginger Alford (from Biloxi’s One Reason) is also on board, and her choruses remain as aching as anything by “the Boss.” Lyrically they’re unabashedly going for it—‘put down those bottles and reach for the six- string’ and “we live in a ghost town and we’re learning how to function.” A perfect summer album.
