Going to the Bone Church, Flameshovel Records
Going to the Bone Church? A silly joke, but the band really is pictured at a bone- reliquary church on the back. I’d expect no less from Make Believe, whose spoken-word track here (replete with bongos) falls apart amidst hearty laughter.
Many people still take Tim Kinsella’s bands too seriously. Maybe because he’s an oblique lyricist – singing “Protest the Vietnam War” in 2008. Or embracing rock-history with “(I can’t understand) Satisfaction” and the lyrics “all porn is gay porn.” Guitars still come like alien Morse code, and the new funk of “Just Green Enough” is sublime as other people’s swimming pools.
