Chemical Chords, 4AD Records
Pop music is no crime, and certainly not by the lovely, creative and leftist band Stereolab. Chemical Chords is their eleventh album in a very long and treat-filled career.
Their sound has continued evolving — moving from swirling, exuberant bursts into more relaxed soundscapes this century. But never unpleasant — their songs are like Sunday brunch outside. So when member Tim Gane describes this record as “purposefully short, dense, fast pop songs,” I was hoping for a return to Switched On. No such luck, but The Beatles moments happily co-exist with the French pop styles and shards of the old, glorious buzz.
