Which Rock Star Did You Steal That Headband From?

As a citizen of Gainesville, I believe that I can justly say that the majority of Gainesville has an amazing unique style. This style often evolves from the local music scene; therefore it is only natural that Gainesville bands tap into the creative fashion realm. Consider The Beatles, Prince, Queen, David Bowie… What is music without fashion?
Oh Fortuna is a local band that never disappoints my cravings for great talent encased in extraordinary outfits. The band understands fashion and the power that fashion has to draw people in. On its MySpace page, its members describe themselves as “seismically proportioned psychedelic-heart-felt noise-drenched-positive-energy- post-electronic dance collective.” That wordy statement actually translates to the stage.
For each show, Oh Fortuna performs to what it thinks of as an outlandish theme. Each of the eight members then dress in the chosen theme, as do the band’s following of young hipsters. Oh Fortuna has dressed like Miami-style creeps wearing cutoff jean shorts and mid-drift showing T-shirts that quoted statements like “I’m in your boyfriend’s top 8,” and “Loserville.”
Then there was the miserable Christmas (“A Christmas full of broken promises, and arms”), and Harry Potter themes, and the famous Glam theme with full on Glam make-up with the front man posing in a scandalous leotard. The audience’s excitement when he turned around to face the band is a moment that will be shown on VH1’s Most Shocking Concert Moments. One of the most “creative” themes was American Apparel. The theme wasn’t glorifying a chain store, spandex or gold lamé — rather it was a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the great U.S. of A! This show was full of red, white and denim; true American colors that imbue the heart with sentiment and create a desire for overalls, and tacky high-waisted shorts with a cute red blouse tied at the midriff. Oh, and how could I forget the shiny Budweiser jacket that screams “I’m a ‘merican!”
The truly amazing part of this is that Oh Fortuna is taken seriously despite being clad in these outrageous costumes. Oh Fortuna is made up of eight of the most creative, beautiful, fashion forward and friendly individuals that Gainesville has to offer. Dress in theme with them and expect confetti, balloons and abstract moving of bodies. Keep your eyes and ears open for upcoming shows that will please at least four of the five senses.
